The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko, has been hard at work to ensure that communities adhere to the health and safety protocols to flatten the curve of the coronavirus. The MEC visited various shopping centers and taxi ranks as part of government’s efforts to enforce compliance with health and safety protocols to slow down the spread of Covid-19.
The Covid-19 compliance programme which commenced on 22nd of May 2021 took place in Vanderbijlpark, Sebokeng, Tshepong and De Deur in Sedibeng region. MEC Mazibuko was joined by government officials from various spheres of government such as the Provincial and Local Government. The MEC monitored closely the maintenance of food products by shops in line with the required health and safety standards, the wearing of masks and adherence to social distancing. Many food products were confiscated after they were found expired.
Meanwhile the MEC also visited the Lakeside Multi-purpose Centre vaccination site to monitor and assess the roll-out of vaccination programme aimed at curbing the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The MEC observed with shock that many community members in Sedibeng region were not wearing masks and disregarded social distancing hence the growing number of infections in the area. “I am shocked at the level of lawlessness in this area. The sooner our people start wearing masks in public spaces, the better. Sedibeng region is contributing significantly to the rising numbers of covid-19 infections. The only way to slow the spread of this virus is through adherence to the covid-19 health protocols,” said MEC Mazibuko.
“The Covid-19 third wave is upon us; we need to take seriously all the precautions that are in place. Our health system is stretched to the limit due to many patients that are admitted because of the Covid-19 virus. We need to continuously educate our community members to continuously wash their hands or sanitize, practice safe social distancing and wear their masks at all times,” added MEC Mazibuko.
The MEC also encouraged community members to get vaccinated to slow the spread of the virus.
